«Herbicide Tolerant varieties«

4-6th July, 2019 Thessaloniki, Greece

The EWRS is an international organization which promotes and co-ordinates scientific research into all aspects of weed science.

Using this site, the EWRS aims to provide support for international collaboration in weed science, partly by assisting the work of the EWRS Working Groups, and partly by providing general information and resources.

Working groups

Optimising herbicide use in an IWM context

The overall objective of the working group is to promote collaboration and exchange of information among EWRS members involved in research on chemical weed control to ensure an optimum use of herbicides in European crop production. Another objective is to promote the collaboration between researchers in public institutes and the agrochemical industry. The working group was formed in 1993 in response to the increased interest in many European to optimise and reduce herbicide inputs and successfully completed a EU Concerted Action in 1997. The working group is now the process of initiating new activities.

Herbicide tolerant varieties

The commercial introduction of the HT varieties in Europe goes hand in hand with periodically very polarized and emotional discussions. The members of this new WG committed to look for a scientific and balanced evaluation of the agronomic impact that these HT varieties will cause. Impacts to be studied would include weed management in the new varieties as well as in the overall crop rotation, advantages and/or disadvantages for the rotational systems, watch outs and opportunities for HT varieties in specific agricultural systems, economic as well as agronomic sustainability.

As some HT varieties obtained via mutagenesis are finding their commercial way into European agriculture it was agreed to prioritize the evaluation for some of these crops.
